Timely quote from Heinlein’s Time Enough for Love: 💬

2020-09-22 · quote

If you are part of a society that votes, then do so. There may be no candidates and no measures you want to vote for ... but there are certain to be ones you want to vote against. In case of doubt, vote against. By this rule you will rarely go wrong. If this is too blind for your taste, consult some well-meaning fool (there is always one around) and ask his advice. Then vote the other way. This enables you to be a good citizen (if such is your wish) without spending the enormous amount of time on it that truly intelligent exercise of franchise requires.

I still have a bunch of flower pictures from before our evacuation (not much blooming now), so I might as well post them occasionally for your enjoyment, on no set schedule. Here’s an aster shrub. 🌱🌼

On the homestead blog: the first day back in the duck house and run for the ducklings, with the kiddie pool. 🦆

On the homestead blog: we did a quick half-hour visit to our beehives today, to swap out the mite treatment strips and add "bee juice”, a syrup of sugar water to help the bees build up their winter stores, since there aren’t many flowers blooming at this time of year. 🐝

Video: this morning I set up the kiddie pool in the duckling run again. The new ducklings were excited to swim and dive in it, having gotten used to it in their evacuation trailer pen. Since the water is fresh, you can clearly see their feet paddling away. And all the water splashing me, sitting right next to the pool! 🦆

On the homestead blog: the daily duckling update with our return home from our evacuation. 🦆

On the homestead blog: we plan to go home today. Like yesterday's Flock Friday, I was able to capture some pictures of the feral cats via the remote connection to my cameras. #Caturday 🐈

On the homestead blog: we’ll probably head home tomorrow. So this might be the last duckling update from the excellent trailer pen that Mom and her partner provided for the ducklings. 🦆

On the homestead blog: we’re still at Mom’s place (current thought is maybe heading home tomorrow; continuing to evaluate the smoke). But I still have some chicken and duck pictures for you. #FlockFriday 🦆🐓

On the homestead blog: today I increased the depth of the duckling kiddie pool by another few inches, to the point where they can no longer touch the bottom — so they are actually swimming for the first time. 🦆

Back in 2005 we visited Hawaii for our 10th anniversary. Here are a bunch of pictures of the Byodo-In Temple on the east side of O'ahu. #ThrowbackThursday

On the homestead blog: today marks the start of the sixth week of these ducklings, which is when they are officially old enough to swim, plus no longer need heat (though they’ve been without that for the past week anyway). 🦆

On the homestead blog: today the fire officials announced that they have 3% containment of the "Riverside Incident” fire. They also notified us of further reductions in evacuation levels. We are now in the level 1 zone.

Video: a couple slow motion clips of a Rouen duckling spreading her waterproofing oils and dunking her head, then a normal speed (though seems sped up after the slow-mo) clip of three ducklings enjoying the pool. 📹🦆

On the homestead blog: one of the things I brought yesterday from the homestead to Mom’s place was the duckling kiddie pool, which I set up today in the trailer pen. 🦆
