Douglas Adams is best known for The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but his Dirk Gently series is also pretty good. A quote from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: 📚💬 #mbmay

It is a rare mind indeed that can render the hitherto non-existent blindingly obvious. The cry 'I could have thought of that' is a very popular and misleading one, for the fact is that they didn't, and a very significant and revealing fact it is too.

A moment of cuteness: Poppy and Porcini snuggling in their house. 🐈

A video of a chicken telling me all about the egg she just laid. Sound on!

Another favorite book is Isaac Asimov’s Foundation. The whole series, really. Here’s a quote: 📚💬 #mbmay

... such folly smacks of genius. A lesser mind would be incapable of it!

On the homestead blog: yesterday we started the potato planters. I added some scoria and dirt to the planter frames, Jenn planted the seed potatoes, and I added new irrigation for them.

An informative and entertaining Apple-focused news site, written by Macworld alums and podcasters Jason Snell and Dan Moren. A great membership podcast, too.

Here's an amusing meta-quote from Heinlein’s Time Enough for Love, which was one of my all-time favorite books as a kid: 📚💬 #mbmay

Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of — but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.

I’ve gotten out of the habit of reading books in recent years — nowadays I just read Twitter, Micro.blog, and blog posts. Not great, perhaps. So I’m going to re-interpret this week’s Micro.blog challenge as more quotes from old favorite books.

Today’s color micro challenge is violet. This is a knitting project Jenn is currently working on, a shawl she’s doing as part of a mystery knit-along. 📷🌈 #mbmay

On the homestead blog this week, a couple of cam screenshots (showing all five cats), a couple of GIFs (showing Poppa at the cabins, and a day inside the house), and more for your weekly #Caturday 🐈

Just got back from a trip to Costco. Certainly different than the last time we went there a couple of months ago. No rationing, and plenty of stocks of everything, but lots of social distancing signs and floor markers, cashier screens, etc.

Today’s Micro.blog color challenge is indigo. That’s a tricky one… the best I can come up with is these irises, though they might be straddling the line between indigo and violet? 📷🌈 #mbmay

On the homestead blog this week: followup on Gert, news about ducklings, a duck and bird GIF, and various chicken pics. Yep, it’s #FlockFriday 🦆🐓

Today’s color is blue. Appropriately, it is also Peace Officers Memorial Day, so I lowered our flag to half-staff, with the illuminated flag and a blue sky enhanced by night mode. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. 📷🌈 #mbmay

My first sourdough bread loaves were a bit disappointing… they kinda sagged (and merged), so I guess had too much hydration. Tasted fine, though not particularly sourdough-y; I gather the flavor will improve as the starter ages. 🍞

Pictures of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Yaquina Bay Bridge, taken in April 2003 during an anniversary trip to the Oregon coast. (Hey kids, in the Before Times people could actually travel and stay places.) #ThrowbackThursday
